UN Security Council condemns hostage taking of cargo ship in Yemen

United Nations, Jan 14 (PTI) The UN Security Council has condemned the capture of a UAE-flagged cargo ship by Houthi rebels in Yemen’s Hudeidah port and called for the immediate release of the ship and its crew. . Seven Indian nationals are also on board the ship.

“The members of the Security Council condemn the capture of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) flagged ship RWABEE off the coast of Yemen by Houthi rebels on January 2, 2022,” the council said in a press statement issued on Friday on the incident. ‘s.

The Council demanded the immediate release of the ship and its crew and underlined the need to ensure their safety till then.

India has requested the immediate release of the seven Indians on board the ship.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti said on Wednesday, “We are concerned about the continuing intensification of military operations in Yemen. The fierce clashes in Sanaa, Marib and Shabwa in the last few years are undermining the prospects for peace.

He had expressed concern that the taking of the UAE’s ‘Rawabi’ ship hostage off the Hudeida coast earlier this month would add to the already ongoing tensions.

Tirumurti said, “We express grave concern over this act which has put the maritime security in the region at risk. Seven Indian nationals are also included in the crew on board and we are deeply concerned about their safety and well being.

The Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday that all seven Indians on board the ship were safe and the government was making all efforts for their early release.
